“Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule” Author: Harriette Gillem Robinet
Rating: 5 Star
It’s a junior fiction but all ages will enjoy it! Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule setting is during the Civil War time when slaves became free. The story is humorous but yet serious. It’s about how many African Americans families struggled, shared and persevered after freedom came. The main characters will take you to a time when love was the essence of survival for family after freedom came. You will always remember the main character Pascal who was crippled but yet powerful. Although, Pascal and his family set out to discover what freedom really meant, it wasn’t as easy as they thought. Pascal really found the true meaning of freedom.
I recommend families read this book after dinner with the entire family.

“The Crate” Authors: Brian A. Pope and Eva G. Guzant
Rating: 5 Star
This book was written by one of Warren County’s families.
It’s an easy fiction book that all fathers should read to their sons. Its okay to read to the girls of the family, but the greatest impact will be on the males of the family especially if dad read it! It’s about a young boy who has to write a paper on a role model. He was ashamed of what his father did for a living, so he decided that maybe he would write about the man sitting on the crate every day that wore the nice jewelry and drove the nice cars.
Great reading!

“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” Author: Rebecca Sckloot
Rating: 10 Star
The book was about a young black woman’s fight and struggle with an aggressive form of cancer. How the cancer cells removed from her body during biopsy and cultured without permission, was a major contribution to scientific research in the world. The HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of first and last names) were aggressive, robust and reproduced boisterously in a lab at John Hopkins. They were the first human cells ever to grow cultured environment and take on a life of their own. Overnight they became a biological celebrity for research labs all over the world. While the practice of naming cultured cell from the first two letters of first and last names of a donor may have been an effective method of categorizing and tracking cultured cells, the real person (donor) could easily become dissociate and lost in the process. That is what happen to Henrietta Lacks, a patient at the hospital's "colored" ward.
The author introduces us to the the "real live woman behind the HeLa cells," the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of a century. I vividly, recall a passage in the book where a lab assistant at her (Henrietta’s) autopsy, who had cultured so many HeLa cells, glanced at her painted red toenails and thought: "Oh jeez, she is a real person . . . .
For me the book was history, science and a biography all in one. One history fact I discovered was the inception of John Hopkins, the location and purpose of the facility. From a scientific point I got a better understanding of how cancerous cells can ravage and destroy a human body. Finally, the biography aspect of the book reconnects the dots between the HeLa cells and the real person . . . . Henrietta Lacks, traces the family's emotional ordeal, the changing of ethics and the law around tissue collection.
The book was awesome and very enlightening!
